Guys… I’m sad. This is my last Halloween treat to share with you. The last 2 weeks went by so fast! I guess I’m not too sad though, because I’ve got some fun crafts coming your way next week!
But for now, let’s give these push-up pops the attention they deserve! I bought a set of push-up containers* a few years ago, and I absolutely love them. I was happy to have an occasion to bust these bad boys out and the kiddos were too.
The best thing about these pops is that they’re so customizable! You can use any flavor of cake, any color of frosting, and kind of decorations, etc! For mine, I chose chocolate cake and orange frosting, to make it more Halloweeny 🙂
There are 2 ways you can go about making your cake… Option 1: Bake the cake as normal, cut out circles, then cut those circles in half {horizontally}. Option 2 {which is what I did}: Pour your batter into 2 pans, and bake much thinner cakes. This is probably the easier option, but they cook faster, so keep your eye on them!
When your cake has completely cooled, use a push-up container to cut out some circles. Put them close together to get as many circles as possible! If you baked the cake normally, this is when you would cut the circles in half. Otherwise, they’re ready to go.
Assemble the pops by gently pushing a cake circle all the way into a push-up container. Smother in it a big swirl of frosting, and top that with another circle of cake.
You can pop these in the fridge until you need them, but don’t put the Reddi-wip on until right before serving. You don’t want it getting droopy and making your cake soggy,
The chocolate decorations on top are actually way easier than you’d think! Here’s a hint… Find some pictures online of whatever shapes/objects you want to decorate with, and print them off. Lay a piece of plastic wrap over the print-out, and trace the lines with the chocolate! No one has to know you cheated 🙂
- 1 baked cake, cooled (boxed, or recipe of choice)
- 1 Can of orange frosting
- 2 Piping bags with medium round and very small round tip OR ziploc bags with corner snipped off
- Reddi-wip
- 1 cup candy melts or chocolate, in color of choice
- Halloween sprinkles
- 16 Push-up cake pop containers
- Plastic wrap
- Melt candy melts according to package directions and spoon into piping bag with size 1 tip OR spoon into bag and snip off a very small piece of the corner.
- Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap and pipe candy melts into design of choice. (You can print out shapes/pictures online, place the plastic wrap on top of the paper, and "trace" the images with the chocolate.) Set aside to dry.
- Using a cake pop container as a template, cut out as many circles of cake as you can. Slice the circles in half, horizontally, to make the layers thinner.
- Spoon frosting into piping bag OR spoon into a ziploc bag, and snip off 1 corner.
- Place 1 cake circle into an assembled cake pop container, and gently push it all the way to the bottom.
- Pipe a swirl of frosting on top of first cake layer, then top with another layer of cake.
- Repeat with all cake pops.
- Dispense a swirl of Reddi-wip on each cake pop, and top with sprinkles and/or chocolate garnishes.
- Serve immediately.
