When I was younger, one of my favorite things about holidays was the decorations. We had all of our holiday things stored in big blue tubs, and we all looked forward to the day my mom dragged a tub out of the storage room.
I had my favorite decorations for each holiday, and for Halloween it was a set of spiders we had since the beginning of time. They were attached to a stretchy cord, and meant to be hung up. The bounciness made them way too much fun to just be decorations though, so naturally, my brother and I used them as weapons.
This year, I decided to make my own version of those spiders!
Materials needed:
4″ Smoothfoam ball
2 yards mini feather boa {or other fluffy material}
Black paint
Paintbrush
Stretchy cord
Hot glue gun
Black and white felt {Not pictured}
Scissors {Not pictured}
Start off by painting your foam ball black and letting it dry. Then, glue one end of the stretchy cord onto the top of the foam ball. There should be a little hole, so just tuck the cord inside, fill it with hot glue, and wait a few minutes for it to dry.
Starting at the top, start gluing your feather boa on the foam ball. Do small sections at a time, gluing as you go.
Work in a circular motion, going around the ball many times, until it is covered from top to bottom {I used 1 yard for this}. Because the material I used had lot of bulk/featheriness to it, I didn’t need to put the layers too close together. I spaced it out a bit, and the feather covered it just fine so you can’t see through. And even if you could, the ball is black so you won’t even notice 🙂
When you reach the end, just snip off what you don’t need and glue down the tip of the boa.
Next, you’ll want to add legs! I cut 4 legs that were each 1/4 yard long, then glued them each on the bottom of the spider, making sure they were centered.
For the eyes, you could use some giant googly eyes or do what I did and make some out of felt. I simply hot-glued some small black circles onto white circles, then glued those onto the spider.
And that’s it! Your cute little spider is ready to go! Hopefully my little monkeys aren’t too rough on this little guy, but if karma has any say in the matter, he’ll be flying around our house in no time 🙂
