It’s book club time again! I’m really excited about this one, y’all. It’s adorable.
Cook-a-Doodle-Doo is about Big Brown Rooster – the great-grandson of the Little Red Hen. In the story, he enlists the help of an iguana, turtle, and potbellied pig, to make a strawberry shortcake. Unfortunately, his helpers are far from being the next iron chefs. My little monkeys giggled through the entire book, laughing at how the animals create all kinds of silly mishaps in the kitchen.
They do all kinds of silly things, like trying to “beat” an egg with a baseball bat. In fact.. it kind of reminded me of Owen. It just seemed like stuff he would do 🙂
They practiced their cutting skills with plastic knives – Sophie was pretty good! Owen… was mostly interested in eating and playing.
In the back of the book there’s a recipe for strawberry shortcake, which we made. It was delicious! Just how my mom used to make it – not with the gross spongy cake you find in grocery stores, but with a yummy homemade biscuit. I did change a couple things… I mashed up the strawberries into a chunky sauce, and added a bit of sugar. And I added a bit of sugar and vanilla to the whipped cream. You don’t have to do that, but it certainly makes it taste delicious!
While we were cooking, Soph wanted to make the same mistakes the animals made. I told her we better not 🙂 But she did assign out parts – I was the iguana, Owen was the turtle, and she was the pig (who kept wanting to sneak bites)!
It was such a cute book, and a really fun activity! My little monkeys love to help in the kitchen, so this was right up their alley. The recipe was simple and easy to follow, so they could do a lot of the steps by themselves. And I’ve certainly been enjoying the leftovers 🙂
