Why is it that the last few weeks of pregnancy move in S-L-O-W motion?! Honestly, I feel like this pregnancy has gone by really fast. The whole time, I kept thinking “wow! I’m really this far along?” Which is weird, because my other pregnancies seemed to take ages.
But now that I’m in the home stretch, time could not be going slower. I’m 38 1/2 weeks, and feel like I should’ve had this thing a long time ago! Everyone keeps telling me I’m so close, which I know I am, but I feel like I’m going to be pregnant forever. I’m not sure I even remember what it’s like to not be pregnant…
Okay, so I may be a bit of a drama queen. But I’ve been growing a human for 9 months. So I think that’s fully justified 🙂
To celebrate the soon-to-be arrival of our little one, and to make time go by faster, I decided to make some fun baby crafts. This project was so easy – it’s perfect for a beginner!
Here’s what you need:
- Flannel fabric, prewashed (1 yard)
- Terry cloth, prewashed (1 yard)
- Thread
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Grid ruler
- Sewing machine
I bought 1 yard of flannel and 1 yard of terry cloth, and ended up making 6 burp cloths. But obviously you can make as many or as few as you want! Be warned, though… they are kind of addicting 🙂
1. Start off by cutting out your fabric – I cut mine about 11″ x 16″, which I thought made the perfect size for a burp cloth. Then pin the pieces together, making sure the “right” side of the flannel is facing inward.
2. Sew the pieces of fabric together, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Leave an opening big enough to turn your burp cloth right-side-out (about 4 inches). Cut off the corners to reduce the bulk, just be sure you don’t cut any of the stitches!
3. Turn your burp cloth right-side out, and make sure the corners are all pushed out. Find the hole you left open, and fold in the fabric to make it line up right.
4. Once it’s folded in, you shouldn’t really be able to tell that the hole is there. If you need to, you can iron the fabric to keep it in place, but I found that the flannel and terry cloth did a great job at staying put. Sew a top stitch around the entire edge of the burp cloth (which will sew up the hole) and you’re done!
I’m not a super fast seamstress, and haven’t even been sewing for that long, but these were super simple and came together in about 20 minutes a piece. Not bad! They’re so cute, and would make the perfect baby gift.
This is great!! I had high aspirations of making these with my first…didn’t happen but good to know they are easy enough!
Ooh, these look easy enough that even I could manage them (my sewing skills are lacking!) I might have to try some of these soon, there are a few expectant mothers at our church that could probably use them. Thanks for the idea!
My sewing skills are lacking, too! I’m certainly no pro 🙂 But these are super simple!
I have a question. I’m currently working on these for a friend and I know to put the flannel side down so when you turn it inside out the right side is showing, but what about the terry cloth? Both sides look the same to me on the terry cloth so I thought I’d ask. Thanks.
It doesn’t matter! They look the same to me, too 🙂
This looks so much fun to do. I hope I could make it beautifully like what you did in your instructions. Will definitely share this! Thanks! #mygeniusproducts
Id like to make these by upcycling some fabrics I already have at home, what would you recommend other than terry cloth for the thicker side? TIA!
